Make Nine 2021

02.02.21

It is literally weeks after I had originally planned to share this post but finally I am excited to share my Make Nine plans for 2021. Last year was the first time I have ever participated in this challenge. At the time I set last year’s goal, I was slightly apprehensive that I would not be able to meet it. As a result of setting the goal, I ended up feeling extremely determined to complete it and in the process, grew into the confident and creative sewing practice that I enjoy today. I ended up making many, many more items than the nine I selected last year, but they all helped continue to fill out my handmade wardrobe and many helped me grow my skill set in one way or another.

This year, those two tenets are the main focus of my selections once again: 1. a need and/or want for a particular garment in my wardrobe, and 2. practicing skills I wish to refine and/or learning new sewing skills. Here’s what I have planned for this year’s #makenine.

Lucia Top
Dawn Jeans
Jasika Blazer
Ultimate Trousers
Lena Horne Dress
Cardamome Dress
Stanwyck Dress with Collar
Old Mexico Blouse
Mesange Top

Lucia Top/Sew Over It

This top just barely missed the cut for my Make Nine 2020 and since I didn’t get around to making it last year, I knew it was a no brainer for this year. I adore the fun and flirty look with the off the shoulder cut and the ruffle at the top. It has a potential for adaptations as well such as shortening the sleeves, lengthening the bodice into a dress, and pulling the sides up onto the shoulders for a bit more coverage.

Dawn Jeans/Megan Nielsen

This year I WILL make jeans! I plan to start working on these sometime in the next few weeks. I really thought I would get around to jeans last year but it just never happened. However, I made several pairs of pants, became familiar with both zip and button flies, and learned at least a bit about pants fitting. I feel ready to tackle these soon and am so excited at the prospect of finally having me made jeans! This will be a milestone project for sure.

Jasika Blazer/Closet Core Patterns

I am not generally the kind of person that wears blazers regularly but I feel like I could be and I kind of want to be. When I think of all the ways I could style a blazer, I end up with overwhelming inspiration. This gives me hope that if I sew one, chances are good I may actually wear it. I am a bit intimidated by the idea of this project overall and it will definitely be one of the most intense sewing projects I’m planning this year, but I still think I can do it. I did buy the course that goes along with this pattern to help give myself all the tips and confidence I need to make this project a success.

Ultimate Trousers/Sew Over It

I have been meaning to try this pattern for several years and have had fabric in my stash earmarked for it for just as long, but somehow these have never happened. Since I generally prefer a narrower silhouette for pants and because these would be ideal workwear for me, I am eager to master this design and hopefully end up with a tried and true pattern that I can make over and over again.

Lena Horne Dress/Tabitha Sewer

I really love dresses. I love sewing dresses AND I love wearing dresses, and if I was going on whim alone, my make nine would probably be made up of nine dresses. I am really excited to finally try this pattern out, as it has been on my mind since its release last year. This design has so much potential and I love how different it can look sewn up in all different fabrics. There are many gorgeous versions to peruse in the pattern hashtag. I don’t know for sure yet which fabric I will use but I do know this has me wishing for summer and warm weather even more than before!

Cardamome Dress/Deer and Doe

I have been in love with this pattern from the moment I first saw it. It is very, very me. When I first saw it a few years ago I felt like it was probably beyond my skill level but now I’m really excited to try it. This is another one that will be great for work, and I love the potential for fabric mixing/pattern mixing with the separate yoke. I have no idea yet what fabric I’ll use but I’m really excited to see how this turns out.

Stanwyck Dress with Collar/Charm Patterns Patreon

I used to have a ready to wear dress with a very similar silhouette and I have been dying to find a sewing pattern to recreate it. When Gertie released this expansion for her Stanwyck skirt pattern, I was thrilled. It felt like exactly the pattern I had been dreaming of.

Old Mexico Blouse/Folkwear

When we visited Mexico pre-pandemic, I really wanted to find a blouse or dress with the hand embroidery that some regions are known for. However, we never came across any in our wanderings and admittedly, I planned everything around food and not shopping. Folkwear offers all sorts of authentic vintage and folk styles from around the world, and I was giddy when I discovered they had a pattern for the blouse I had been dreaming of. I really wanted to include one slow project this year that includes embroidery detailing, and this will fill that desire as well as finally giving me the top I had hoped to find during our trip.

This top pattern is a perfect example of simple elegance. It has four different views and I think they are all lovely, but this version with the scoop back and peplum skirt is my favorite. This has so much potential and my mind goes into creative overload when I think of the fabric possibilities. I think it is safe to say I will be making more than one of these.
