After sifting through lots of Austin restaurant information online and recommendations sent to me by friends in the area, I couldn’t wait to try out Uchi. I was excited to realize it was very close to our AirBNB. Andrew and I decided to go there for our special night out. I figured Monday evening at 5:30 couldn’t be that bad. There weren’t reservations available but still – Monday at 5:30? No sweat. Actually, we got there and were informed the wait was 1.5 hours!

I was tired out from a busy day and in no mood to figure out other food plans, especially with a kid in tow. I think my hangry face got the best of those at the host stand because they called their sister restaurant Uchiko which had space (only at the sushi bar!) and they held a couple of spots for us. We Ubered over and finally were seated, as luck would have it, just before the end of happy hour. This meant most of our food and my drink was half price. Other than the initial hiccup of actually getting into the place to eat, the rest of the meal and the service were great. Read on below for more details!

We were so happy to finally see this sign after missing out on Uchi! The ride over was longer than expected due to accident-related traffic. We were relieved to have made it safely!

I never could have imagined I would be the person who would want to discuss the wine list with a server, but I am so that person. I was grateful our waitress at Uchiko was knowledgeable and offered me good suggestions. I loved the champagne I ended up trying.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t remember exactly what all we ate. I was flustered by the time we got to our seats and wasn’t in a decision making mindset. Sitting at the bar provided a useful advantage in this regard, as the sushi chef right in front of us gladly made the selections for us. Since we aren’t picky and don’t have any dietary restrictions, we let him offer us a menu of his choosing. It was all made right in front of us and we loved every single course. Every bite was fresh and flavorful, and also beautifully presented.

We really enjoyed being able to observe the kitchen while we ate our delicious meal, and chat a bit with the chefs as well.

I almost never order dessert at sushi restaurants, both because I’m too full and because they generally don’t have options that tempt me. Since it was Andrew’s special night, I let him make that call and we ended up with the incredible dessert. I cannot recall all the details of it now but I remember that it was cereal based in a way reminiscent of Milk Bar, and that we ate every last bite of it. It was incredible! If you have room for dessert, I recommend it!

This party room seems like such a gorgeous, warm, and intimate space to host an event. I loved imagining what it would be like full of guests.
