A month or so ago, I received a copy of America’s Test Kitchen’s Cooking School Cookbook for review. I’ve been perusing it ever since and have been excited to share it with you! It’s no secret that I love practically everything put out by ATK. To be honest though, when I first heard the premise of this book (cooking school), I thought this might be better suited for someone with a little less kitchen experience. And while it certainly is true that this book would be perfect for someone looking to improve their kitchen prowess, it is absolutely full of great information, kitchen tips, and solid, reliable recipes that a cook of any level can appreciate.
Some of the highlights of this book and its format (in my opinion):
- Clear descriptions and photos of all kinds of basic kitchen techniques – everything from cutting vegetables, whipping egg whites, prepping seafood, etc.
- Overview of common mistakes and bad outcomes associated with various recipes and how to avoid them
- Step-by-step high quality color photos of many recipes – these would be especially helpful for someone just learning their way around the kitchen
- 600 recipes – that’s a lot! Definitely a perfect go-to resource when you are looking for a reliable recipe or trying to find a way to prepare a random ingredient you happen to have on hand.
We have tried a few different recipes from the book so far and have loved all of the results. Poaching multiple eggs simultaneously without a special piece of equipment? Oh yes, this book taught me how. Steamed mussels in white wine? Bam, done and soooo awesome. And of course, it does include many recipes I already know and love from ATK.
