Do these cupcakes look familiar to you? If so, that’s because I’ve posted them before. But here they are again with an improved recipe. Black forest is a classic flavor combination that just works so well together – chocolate cake, cherry filling and whipped cream frosting. The first time I posted these cupcakes the cherry filling was not a reliable recipe, and it has been nagging at me ever since. This time I attempted to find a better filling and good news – I found one! I considered a version made with fresh cherries but in the end I decided to go with something using frozen cherries so these can be made year round without breaking the bank. I’ve also swapped out the previous cake recipe for my favorite chocolate cupcake base because it is sturdier, making it easier to fill and also easier to eat. Now I’m much happier with this recipe and I hope you’ll try the new and improved version!

I have wanted to try a black forest recipe for a while. The look beautiful and I am sure your co-workers just love you!
I’ve made a variation of this cupcake, but I wasn’t fancy and just used cherry pie filling (blasphemy, I know). It actually worked pretty well……. the cupcake had the perfect texture, and it definitely had that cherry taste.
If they were any prettier we wouldn’t want to eat them!

Chocolate and cherries- two of my favorite things! I want to try the Guiness and Bailey’s cupcakes first {beer+alcohol+cake=Irish love!} but these run a close second. They are so cute!

Here’s what I would do: Use canned cherry pie filling (regular or light) for the middles. The tartness of the cherries might add a little something to the balance of the flavors. I love your blog and visit it nearly every day. You are one amazing woman!

i have made another version of black forest cupcakes but mine had a cream cheese and used the cherry pie filling. nothing from scratch since that was when i was first learning how to bake from scratch. it used a cake mix batter and then actually the cream cheese mixture and cherry pie filling before i top it off with more cake batter and baking it all. everyone loved it though and people still want more of it to this day.
Black forest cake is my fave, so I’m sure I’d love these! Can’t wait to see if you find another filling recipe:)
very very pretty cupcakes. i “supervised” a friend at mine when she wanted to make a blackforest cake for her bf and no amount of insisting on my part would make her change her mind on making cupcakes instead of a whole cake. if i showed her yours then, it might have probably changed her mind! :P

Annie – I have never heard of espresso powder before…can you tell me, is it instant coffee, or something else? Can you tell me what section in the market you normally find it?

Hi Amanda,
Espresso powder is not the same thing as instant coffee. It is used to make espresso, which is different than coffee. I can’t find it at my normal grocery store and usually buy it at either The Fresh Market or Williams Sonoma. If you can’t get any, try Google for a substitute. It is a nice thing to have around though. It’s used in a lot of chocolate recipes to help intensify the chocolate flavor.

The cherry filling looks similar to a strawberry filling that I use to make a strawberries & cream cupcake except that my recipe also has cornstarch in it to thicken it. If it needs a little stronger cherry flavor, add some cherry extract. Just a couple ideas. I think I’m going to make these cupcakes for Valentine’s Day. They look absolutely delicious!
Sorry, I didn’t read the directions for the filling, just read the ingredients. LOL. My strawberry filling is cooked until it thickens. I’m not sure how fresh cherries would cook, but I still think I’m going to try it just for a thicker filling.
I MUST TRY THESE SOON! My father recently bought boxes and boxes of cherries and I’ve been searching for something a cupcake recipe that was complete and one that used FRESH cherries (not the usual ones that use jams & etc!) and couldn’t find one that I really liked. And without deliberately finding for it in your site (I was merely checking for your updates!), I found this. Excellent!!!!!! Will try these out really soon! :)

No secrets, just practice, practice, practice! Also, careful observation of other food photos you like. Analyze them and figure out what it is that makes it good, and then try to apply those principles in your own photography.

I use a pastry bag to get my frosting to look nice. It makes a huge difference in the presentation of cupcakes. And if you look above, in the earlier comments, I explained exactly which tip I used for this particular cupcake.

I made these this weekend for my brother’s graduation and what a great recipe! The chocolate cake and whipped cream frosting paired perfectly. I also decided to take your advice and just cut up a few cherries to add to the middle and sprinkle some maraschino juice. The cherry taste was right on. I also made vanilla cupcakes and used your vanilla buttercream. Thank you! I have been searching for a good buttercream frosting and yours is exactly what I have been searching for.

First of all, thank you for the sweet comment. I love knowing my blog is enjoyed by others and I’m glad I am helping make cooking and baking fun for you guys! As for the dessert recommendation, it’s a tough question because the phrase “too sweet” has no meaning to me :) Also, most of the desserts I can think of that would be tart would involve lemon, which I am not huge on so I don’t have a ton of suggestions. I do have lemon sorbet as well as a blackberry lime sorbet on the blog which are fairly tart (and the tartness is easily adjusted by adding more or less sugar). I also have several different fruit tarts which certainly wouldn’t be considered overly sweet, though I doubt they could be classified as sour or tart either. Sorry I can’t be more help! I’ll keep my eye out for some sour desserts and post any that sound intriguing!

Made these & they are delish! My husband wanted them tweaked a little so on the next batch instead of cherry filling, I added vanilla pudding & added vanilla to the whipped topping! Yum. Yum.
I made these into stuffed cupcakes and they were SOO good. One person even said they were the best cupcakes ever!
Do these need to be refrigerated for the frosting and Cherries ?

Sarah’s cupcakes are amazing! I absolutely love decorating cupcakes and the detail and care that she put in each painting mimics the effort that goes into decorating. After much deliberation I would have to say that my favorite is the vanilla caramel cupcake. Although the painting is very simple, she captures the elegance of a simple cupcake through the detail in the star-piped frosting. Absolutely amazing. I’m keeping her under my favorites tab.
My favorite would have to be the Margarita Cupcakes! There is something about the frosting and that lime sitting on top. It looks so real. Sarah is a great artist!

I really think that her best works are the renderings of your photos! It is amazing. I really thought I would lean toward the Strawberry Cupcake painting, because I’ve made those and they turned out perfectly the very first time. However, I think the Margarita Cupcake painting of Sarah’s is my favorite. The icing has such depth. :)

I love black and white in canvas style printing. My favorite is the Black Tie Cupcakes and coincidentally the Black Forest Cupcakes. English is not my first language so there’s a trick in this recipe i may have not understood… What do you mean by draining the cherries? just letting the water drip in a measuring cup? or smashing them to collect its juice?
and when you put the cherries in the saucepan, do you take the cherry stones off before or after? (This really sounds like a stupid question but I feel like every detail is important when we cook: results are never the same ^^)

Her oils of food are truly of photographic quality! I really loved best her rendition of the chocolate striped strawberries but my favorite overall is her oil painting of Morocco…thank you Annie for consistently giving me wonderful food ideas. Our family goes nuts over your Mom’s Goulash and Creamy Chicken Taquitos. I don’t remember how I came across your site a couple years ago but I’m sure glad I did.

My favorite painting by far would be the black forest cupcakes, they just have a perfect balance of colors, and would go perfectly with my room decor. being an artist myself, I REALLY believe that Sarah’s paintings are simply divine. I would have to say my favorite outside of the giveaway one is the Strawberry Cupcake, Oil on Stretched Canvas. It is girly and looks as delicious as the cupcakes actually are. It happens to be one of my favorite recipes on the site.

After admiring Sarah Wain’s art (I’ve actually been scouring Etsy to find art like this to adorn my kitchen), the one print I kept going back to was the Strawberry Cupcake (Oil on Stretched Canvas). Possibly because I have been bidding my time to make those exact cupcakes since the recipe was put up on the blog or could be because the detail is so fantastic! Well I suppose it is more likely that those two reasons are equally good.

If I had to choose my favorite piece, even though dessert baking is my passion, I would choose the yellow and white teacup. As I was growing up in a very small town in PA, my mother collected fine china teacups that were gifted to her from one of her co-workers who was a world traveller “back in the day.” As a young child, I would fantasize about the teacups and where they came from, and dream of drinking from them one day. Of course, I was never allowed to touch them! As my mother has moved into an assisted living facility, now those teacups are mine and are displayed with pride in my dining room. I have had tea in all of the teacups, each time thinking of how the teacups were wrapped and brought back to PA for my mother to enjoy. That’s what I thought of when I saw that perfect yellow and white teacup! Just gorgeous….

They were all beautiful, but I was mesmerized by “Lemons”. I loved the golden yellow color of the fruit and the way she incorporated shadows to give the painting so much depth.

All of her art is beautiful. Morocco is my favorite but I think that’s because I love pictures of places more than food. Of the prints I like the black forest cupcakes the most, but the pomegranate would probably fit better with the rest of the decor in our house.

The Vanilla Bean Cupcake is gorgeous, I’m a sucker for robin’s egg blue.
First of all, WOW! She is amazing! It’s funny, I grew up and live in Wichita, KS and I have family in Bloomington, IN! I go there EVERY SUMMER! I have to come and buy some paintings from her! Now, for my favorite… umm… do I have to pick ONE?? Let’s see, I would say…. the Iced Pumpkin Cookies. It reminds me of something my grandma would do. She always had a plate full of desserts in the middle of her table for anyone to enjoy. This painting automatically made me smile and remember her. My favorite is the margarita cupcake print!
I just jumped onto the website to grab a recipe. I did not think that I would be looking at goregous paintings. I went to Mrs. Wain’s website via my cell phone. When the paintings had thumb nailed I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between them and your photo’s Annie.
I would have to say my favorite is a tie between
the Black Forest Cupcakes and the Chocolate covered strawberries. I think the cherry in the black forest painting is amazing. The way she was able to capture the shine is beautiful. I love that the strawberries look so fresh and the look
Of the white chocolate.
These paintings are astonishing and I think I need to start saving my money. All of those food type paintings would look perfect in my kitchen.
I think the Whoopie Pies painting is the best one- it would look great in my kitchen!

I love the vanilla bean cupcakes print, although the black forest cupcakes are a very close 2nd. My dad loves chocolate and cherries together, I may have to make this recipe for him for Father’s Day. Thanks for posting your revised version :)

All of her art work looks AWESOME so it would be hard to choose just one, but I would have to go with the Margarita Cupcake! It’s so realistic looking…like I coiuld just take my finger and swipe some frosting off of it! Plus green is my favorite color and there is a lot of green in that pic, but again they are all beautiful!
My favorite painting is the pomegranate. The color is so rich, just like the flavor of the fruit. I love it!

Sorry for the delayed response. I think the filling can be made a day in advance but I probably wouldn’t do it farther than that because it may separate. Enjoy!
