Did you know that July is national ice cream month? I don’t know where or when these things get decided, but I’m pretty excited about it nonetheless. Personally my love of ice cream, sorbet and other frozen treats knows no season. I still make and eat ice cream in the dead of winter. But if there is a month for celebrating ice cream then let’s celebrate it! Just as I consider Helen of Tarlette the queen of macarons, I consider David Lebovitz the king (god?) of ice cream, etc. I own a few ice cream cookbooks but The Perfect Scoop is without a doubt the bible of ice cream.
In honor of national ice cream month, I’ll be posting at least one ice cream-related treat each week. The recipe for this pistachio gelato doesn’t actually come from The Perfect Scoop but rather from David’s fantastic blog. Now I normally try to avoid recipes that call for specialty ingredients, but I also know that David only posts reliable recipes that will yield the best end result. If he thinks pistachio cream is necessary for good homemade pistachio gelato, then I believe him. You can read about his thoughts on creating this recipe here. I didn’t really even try finding this locally as it surely would have been a fruitless search. I ordered mine online. The only thing to watch out for is that the size of jar I ordered was slightly less than the amount called for in the recipe. It wasn’t a significant difference so I just made it with what I had and the result was wonderful, but next time I’ll order two jars at least. Plus then I’ll have some left over for adding to buttercream and other things – this stuff is gooood. (The differences between ice cream and gelato are best saved for another time and another post, but if you own The Perfect Scoop you can read David’s thoughts on the matter in the introduction.)
And the gelato? Well, it’s good too. Actually it’s much better than good. I loved the thick, smooth texture and the pretty green color. Even though it may seem to make a small quantity, it actually lasted about five or six nights of dessert in our house because a single scoop is so satisfying. (I do not seem to have such restraint with coffee or chocolate ice cream.)
Now, on to the giveaway! If by some sad turn of events you do not yet own a copy of this wonderful book, this could be your lucky day. Four readers will win their own copy of The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz.
To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling me your absolute SINGLE favorite flavor of ice cream (homemade, store-bought, from an ice cream parlor, whatever!)
The Rules: One entry per person, U.S. residents only. Commenting will close on Sunday, July 4 at 10:00 am, EST. Entries that do not follow the entry requirements will not be considered. Four winners will be chosen at random and announced next week. Good luck!

My mom’s homemade vanilla!
I love a good vanilla ice cream more than any other flavor
My favorite all time ice cream is homemade vanilla. We make it frequently during the summer. I use half and half and a touch of Mexican vanilla. It is fabuouls by itself or on top of a cobbler or crisp!
Ruby Red Grapefruit Gelato!!
Most amazing icecream I’ve ever had.
Hands down my favorite has got to be Grasshopper ice cream from a local ice cream parlor in the town I am from! Absolutely deelish!
I LOVE MapleNut Ice Cream! The soft maple flavor is so perfect and how could I say no to nuts. Mmm
Second favorite is BR’s Rainbow Sherbet, because no other sherbet seems to compare to their amazing flavors. I know, so very different!
It’s really hard to choose, but something like Moose Tracks with chocolate and peanut butter probably comes in first.
My absolute favorite ice cream is chocolate peanut butter!
I’ve been eyeing this book for a long time. Thanks for the chance to win!
Wow, I was just telling my husband I wanted a copy of the perfect scoop. My all time favorite ice cream is Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food
My favorite flavor ice cream is cake batter!
Stracciatella gelato. Sort of like chocolate chip ice cream, but very different (in an amazing way!). Yum yum yum!
Talenti’s Almond Gelato. Ooh yum.
If we’re going healthy, then it’s raspberry sorbet. If we’re going unhealthy, then it’s banana puddding ice cream. And. . .now I’m hungry again.
Haagen Dazs Chococolate Peanut Butter! I have made tons of homemade ice cream and sorbet but nothing beats a cold pint of that delicious chocolate with frozen pb, the best!
Haagen-Dazs Strawberry !!
Homemade butter pecan – sweet, creamy & salty all at the same time. love it!
I love matcha (green tea) gelato! Like this pistachio was for you, I find a single scoop so flavorful that I don’t end up eating the whole container!
I am a classic vanilla girl…but let’s not kid ourselves, I will eat just about any flavor in a pinch. You know, it’s just the right thing to do. ;o)
Hands down Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie … close second though is Grater’s Black Raspberry Chip!
Strawberry ice cream with real strawberries! That’s the way to go! :)
My mother-in-law makes “Milky Way” Ice Cream every summer and it is absolutely delicious! It doesn’t have milky way candy bars in it, but it is made with marshmallows and tastes like a Wendy’s frosty!
I love Culver’s plain chocolate frozen custard! It is the best chocolate ice cream I have ever had!
I was born this month and I love ice cream!!
My most favorite gelato flavor is hazelnut!
Pistachio gelato is actually my favorite! There is a restaurant where I used to live that serves it with a drizzle of caramel sauce & crumbled oreos on top. Life changing!
My favorite is Baskin Robbins or Haagen Daz Chocolate Peanut Butter…noone else seems to do it right besides these two. Unfortuately (or maybe not!?) 2 of my kids are allergic to nuts so it leaves it all for me…which is not good for my diet!
I actaully own The Perfect Scoop, but I would love to give a copy to a friend! My favorite flavor combo at our local shop – Brindles in San Antonio is Honey Pine Nut and Coffee Heath! Yum!
Butter pecan is my all time favortie
Rocky Road… love it! :)
Peppermint!
I love a good vanilla bean. You can add candy, or chocolate or caramel syrup or fruit to it – so versatile
I know this is sad, but after working at Baskin Robbins for a few summers as a kid, my favorite flavor will forever be their Gold Medal Ribbon…chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. I think it was first introduced for the 1980 Olympic games (Lake Placid was winter, Moscow was summer).
My absolute favorite (so far, haven’t attempted homemade ice cream yet!) is Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns. OH SO GOOD…
My favorite homemade ice cream is Coffee Heath Bar Crunch!
My all time favorite is chocolate. I could eat a chocolate ice cream cone any day. You have me itching to make my own!
Orange Sherbert
I know it’s “plain”, but French Vanilla. I love the simplicity and creaminess of it, and you can add so much to it, like candies, sauces, etc. Or, just plain is fine with me, too!
Gold medal ribbon from Baskin Robbins. Vanilla, Chocolate and Caramel, super delicious!!
mmmmm! I think my favorite would be salted caramel ice cream from Ivanna Cone in Lincoln, NE.
I could eat Ben and Jerry’s Halfed Baked all day.
Mint Chocolate chip, oh or maybe Oreo cookie?
Chocolate peanut butter. But Almond Joy and Pistachio are close second and third favorites. :)
Butter Pecan, without a doubt!!
Green Tea Ice Cream!
I love all things ice cream, but my favorite is Chocolate Peanut Butter. Our local ice cream place in Iowa makes a FANTASTIC version with dark chocolate ice cream and LOTS of peanut butter. MMMMMM!!
Any homemade ice cream my dad makes. Chocolate usually wins!
Oh man, ice cream is the key to my heart. I’d have to say right now my favorite is Dreyer’s (Edy’s) S’more’s flavor. YUM YUM YUM!!!

(But coffee is a very close second when I’m feeling less decadent ;)
Easy – coffee ice cream. Mmmmm
Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked – yum!
Black raspberry chip from Graeter’s!
Salted caramel from bi-rite
Coldstone cake batter.
I’m currently in love with Blue Bunny’s Peanut Butter Panic (doused in Magic Shell). Although, when I was in Italy, I ate Pistachio Gelato EVERY DAY for THREE WEEKS!!! mmmmm, so good…
Birthday cake!!!!!!! YUMMY!!
Cookies ‘n Cream
Cookies & Cream – especially if it’s from Brooms Bloom local dairy farm!
My favorite is coffee!! Yummy in my tummy.
I hate to be boring, but give me a vanilla any time. But please be sure to make it with a vanilla bean. Seeing those little dark flecks just set my taste buds off and running.
In the St. Louis area, we have a frozen custard shop called Ted Drewes, and it is just amazing. Every time a baseball game lets out, people drive there and will stand in line for hours just to get some. My favorite flavor is plain chocolate. All other ice creams I can inhale, but when it come to their simple chocolate, I eat it super super slow to savor it!
Definitely butter pecan!
I’d have to say vanilla bean because it’s great alone, and I could dress it up if I wanted. Unfortunately, I do not own my own ice cream maker yet, but winning this book would be the perfect excuse to go get one!
Definitely mint chocolate chip!
My favorite flavor of all time is the coffee recipe from your site (a David Lebovitz recipe I believe!) with oreo cookies added in. YUM!!
The best flavor of ice cream I have ever had is Maggie’s Fudge from Maggie Moos…it’s so simple and creamy and deliciously chocolate without being heavy or too intense! Maggie Moos’ variety of chocolate flavors puts them head and shoulders above Coldstone in my book.
Cookies & Cream!
Cardamom ice cream from the Big Dipper in Missoula, MT – ahhhmazing:)
I recently made a yummy chocolate frappacino icecream and added crushed oreos. My family ate it so fast and they’re begging for more. I guess I’ll be doing that for 4th of July!
Oreo cookies and cream just wins me over everytime. That counts as a single flavor right? :) Its the one ice cream that I can eat over and over again.
I’m a vanilla girl, throw in some caramelized macadamia nuts and then it’s to die for!
my current favorite is Cold Stone Creamery’s Birthday Cake ice cream mixed in with a brownie – YUM! But I’m in a hunt for the best Cherry vanilla ice cream – i just might have to make my own. (Love your blog – your pics are great and i just love your recipes! )
My absolute favorite ice cream of all time is coffee heath from Brown’s in York, Maine! And, since we’re thinking of buying an ice cream maker to fill our kid’s insatiable hunger for ice cream, winning the book would be awesome :)
My favorite flavor is Blackraspberry Chocolate Chip from Glacier (a Boulder, CO ice cream shop). I’ve found other blackraspberry chips before but this one is the creamiest and the chips are the perfect size. And just an FYI, very hard to pick just one. But I did it.
I love the recipe from The pioneer woman for Blackberry!….So rich and delicious:)
I love ice cream that taste nutty: butter pecan, pistachio, hazelnut… but at the moment, I’ve fallen in love with Mint Chocolate Chip from my childhood. Cool, refreshingly minty and just enough chocolate. Perfection!
Chocolate fudge brownie (preferably Ben and Jerry’s but any kid will do!)
frozen custard from Ritter’s
Birthday Cake Ice Cream from Bruster’s!!! SO GOOD! I wish I had some right now! I would love to be able to make yummy ice cream at home! :)
My absolute favorite ice cream is the gelato that I bought probably daily on the streets when I lived in Seville, Spain. So creamy and delicious. My favorite flavor was somesort of triple berry concoction.
I’ve been wanting this book for so long! I love making homemade ice cream.
Blue Bell Homeade Vanilla :)
this really divine Cinnamon ice cream I had a few years ago from a place called Maggie Moo’s. Yummy!
Coffee with chocolate chips in it. Oh yeah!
Vanilla Bean! It goes well with anything, especially with just-out-of-the-oven fruit pie :-) Yum, oh, it’s making me drool…!
Coffee ice cream with heath bar bits and bananas. Yum!
Mint Chocolate chip for sure!
I am boring and plain when it comes to my favorite ice cream because I would prefer just chocolate :)
Peanut Butter Cup from the boardwalk at Newport Beach in CA!
Homemade topped with strawberries! Yummy!
Love Ben and Jerry’s Key Lime Cheesecake!
I absolutely adore lemon soft-serv frozen yogurt! YUM!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Icecream from Thomas’s Sweets in Princeton, NJ.. THE WHOLE ICECREAM TASTES LIKE COOKIE DOUGH! yummm!!!

Homemade vanilla icecream with coconuts, pecans and a little chocolate drizzle.
Straciatella!
Heavenly Hash – i’ve only found it in Canada :( and I don’t live there anymore….
pretty much anything with nuts and chocolate- which makes rocky road my go-to favorite.
I just purchased an ice cream maker and I absolutely adore it! Almost every day I whip up a new batch. So delicious! My favorite flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough – I can’t wait to create my own version!
Strawberry is my absolutel favorite, hands down! Whether it’s store-bought or at my local ice cream shop (Handels and Ritters are my favorites), I could eat it all! It’s so funny how most people always look for different, new, unique flavors but I always seem to go for the classic!
Lately, our little family has been on a homemade ice cream making kick. We’ve recently made vanilla, a really good chocolate recipe, and the next one to try is a cinnamon ice cream recipe. We’re all looking forward to it. So a copy of this book would be right up our alley.
I’d have to say that my favorite ice cream is either anything homemade or vanilla.
You used to be able to buy a store version of pistachio with almonds that is high up on my list. Although my new obsession is mascarpone gelato from a shop down the block from me- amazing!
I love all ice-cream but if somebody put a pint of B&J’s Chubby Hubby in front of me I could not and would not resist. Fortunately for me I think the flavor was discontinued but I sure loved all those chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels – I’m a sucker for sweet/salty combos.
Yum ice cream! It’s a tie homemade Strawberry Vanilla Ice Cream and Banana Pudding Ice Cream. I think I’ll make some this weekend in honor of the month. Can’t wait!
Pralines and Cream…I experiment with other flavors but keep coming back to this one!
Ooh that’s tough. But I think I’ll go with Cake Batter ice cream from Coldstone. With brownie and sprinkles mixed in. :)
Call me boring (I prefer to say I am classic) but I love Breyer’s vanilla bean. Simple, delicious, a hit every time! I’d take vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles over some fancy sundae any day! You are inspiring me to make ice cream at home though. My toddler would adore it if I did!
I LOVE my homemade smores icecream… mmm vanilla bean custard base with fudge chunks, marshmellow and graham cracker swirls :) The best!
My favorite ice cream flavors normally have at least some chocolate in them (cookies and cream, rocky road, brownies a la mode). But my absolute favorite ice cream flavor ever only came out for a limited time at Cold Stone. It was called “Blueberry Muffin Batter” and it pains me that they have not come out with it again. It had the perfect blend of blueberry flavor and vanilla and it literally did taste like muffin batter. I used to love it with blueberries and brownies mixed in (still needed my chocolate fix). This summer they are coming out with a blueberry flavor, but it remains to be seen whether it compares to the flavor I fell in love with.
I love Lemon Custard Ice Cream. If I cannot find that then Pistachio all the way! New to your site, love it!
Arctic Ice Cream Peanut Butter- fortunately (or unfortunately) I get it for free where I work….
Also, long time reader and first time commenter- just wanted to say I love your blog!
Homemade icecream, mmmmmmm. I love making rasberry icecream. but when i go to a ice cream palor i get butter pecan.
Any combination of chocolate and peanut butter! Doesn’t matter which one is the ice cream or the additions. just a great combination all around!
I just went to Gouda, Netherlands today and had a scoop of After Eight gelato— it was sooooooo yummy! I love ANYTHING mint!
Moose tracks. Nothing better than chocolate and peanut butter!
My Uncle Scott runs a gourmet ice cream business… he has invented many flavors but my very favorite has to be KY Bourbon Ball ice cream made with…. you guessed it, Makers Mark!
Cookies and Cream from a local ice cream shop called Sebastian Joe’s
http://www.sebastianjoesicecream.com/
Baskin Robbins German Chocolate Cake ice cream in a waffle cone. YUM!
My absolute favorite ice cream was an Almond Joy ice cream (I belive by Breyer). It was amazing and had so much flavor. My 80 year old grandmother said that it was better than sex, which was really disturbing as a high school freshman. Our store stopped carrying this years ago and it is a true shame. I’m still playing with the memory to make my own version of that delicious treat.
I’m purist–home made vanilla!!
Cherry chocolate.
Fresh mint ice cream from Christina’s in Cambridge, MA. Amazing!
My favorite is Jamoca Almond Fudge from Baskin Robbins. I love the combination of coffee and chocolate. Plus almonds are good for you.
I love any kind of chocolate ice cream but the blackberry cobbler from Blue Bell is great also.
I can’t tell a lie…chocolate all the way! And I heard David Lebovitz has a great recipe/tips for it!
Coffee ice cream… No doubt!
My favorite ice cream is homemade peppermint. I use the candy canes off of my Christmas tree. It’s an incentive to get the tree taken down :)
I love anything chocolate. Ben & Jerry’s used to make a smooth variety that was chocolate ice cream with tunnel of fudge. Man it was the best!
Definitely coffee! Mmmm…
There’s a great ice cream shop in my hometown that makes Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch – it’s SO good. Wish I could have a recipe for that one!
I was wondering – from what website did you order the Pistachio Cream? This recipe looks amazing!
Homemade ice cream is the best – hands down! I distinctly remember my mom’s peach ice cream that we made with peaches we picked from a local orchard – so smooth, creamy, and peachy. My mouth is watering just thinking about it . . .
Blue Bell Chocolate Ice Cream. Yes Please!
My absolute favorite favorite is butterfinger ice cream. It can be either Dreyer’s Loaded (although I haven’t seen it around lately) or just vanilla ice cream with crushed butterfinger bites. Yum! :D
Haagen Dasz Strawberry. It can’t be beat. Every aspect of it is perfectly done, and I could eat it for days. Tangy, sweet, creamy, DELICIOUS!
I love cookies and cream ice cream! It’s awesome. (:
OHHHHHH. I heart Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. A close second is Moosetracks. YUM!
I could never choose just one- I used to work in an ice cream parlor after all! If I had to choose, mint cookies is pretty much perdection.
Blue Bell COFFEE!
I love chocolate, but when it comes to ice cream, vanilla wins out because you can add so much to it! I really need a ice cream recipe book, I haven’t used my ice cream maker yet this summer!
My favorite is Ben & Jerry’s Maple Blondie. It tastes like fall, but that doesn’t stop me from eating it year-round! So delicious. In fact, I might need to make a run to the grocery store later….
I have to pick only ONE flavor?!?!? Do you know me?! :)
Hmmmm ok I think my favorite is homemade peppermint!! Ohhhh now I need to go make some!
Mmm, pistachio!! I think my absolute favorite, however, is cookies ‘n’ cream all the way :)
Velvet Ice Cream’s Moose Tracks. Nothing like it. It’s in the Ohio area so I always stock up when I can.

Only one favorite ice cream? I love them all! But if I had to choose (like I do now,) I would say chocolate- it’s so rich and versatile.
Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby is my all time favorite!
Mocha almond fudge
I studied abroad in Italy in the summer of 2004 and I absolutely know I can attribute the majority of my weight gain to Gelato!! I for some reason REALLY loved the vanilla.. I don’t know what it was about it but it was just beyond amazing! (of course I cant even remember its Italian name)
Vanilla bean! Yummy!
Cake Batter!

I love the pistachio ice cream at Jeni’s in Columbus!
Strawberry Ice Cream. You can’t go wrong!!!

I looooooooove Pralines and cream!!! its so crunchy and yummmmmmy!!
Bryer’s Mint Chocolate Chip!
peach ice cream from hoffman’s in westminister maryland
I love any homemade ice cream, but homemade raspberry ice cream is one of my favorites!
Cherry garcia from Ben and Jerry’s holds a very special and dear place in my heart.
I absolutely LOVE homemade ice cream on a hot summer day! It brings back memories of my childhood just thinking about it. Just plain vanilla with a few berries thrown in is the definition of pure bliss! On a side note, if I can’t get that, Dove’s Unconditionally chocolate is AMAZING!
When I’m feeling naughty I like Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked. When I need to reverse the B&J damage, I whip up a batch of my chocolate vegan icecream!

you just can’t find good gelato out here in MT.
My father’s old fashioned homemade strawberry ice cream. Mmmm!
Butter Pecan!
Hmm. I pretty much love ANY ice cream I’m eating, but I’d have to go with Mint Cookies and Cream. They had it at the University Creamery where I went to college and it was soo good!
Chocolate.
The old fashioned hard kind in a sugar cone!
Mouth watering right now!
I’ve been dying for that book! My favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip!
I have to agree with you – ANYTIME is ice-cream time! I’d rather skip all my meals and have ice-cream for breakfast, lunch, dinner and yep dessert too! My favorite though has got to be mint chocolate chip gelato with those dark chocolate bark chunks in them. Oh yummy. Another one of my favorite’s is mexican vanilla with chunks of fresh strawberries… Okay, I’ll stop right here before I go a tad over-board! :-)
My favorite is one that has been discontinued, which makes me so very sad. I love, love, loved Starbucks Mud Pie. It was coffee ice cream with chunks of Oreo and a fudge swirl. I need to try to recreate it!
Haagen Dazs Caramel ice cream….YUM!
My favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip! And I really like it when the ice cream is green colored too.
Phish Food Ice Cream by Ben & Jerry’s. Best. Thing. Ever.

Cake Batter from Cold Stone, to die for!!
If I *had* to chose, I’d say Peanut Butter. But to be honest, I’ve never met an ice cream flavor I didn’t like.

My absolute favorite is cherry vanilla, homemade with fresh picked bing cherries from a near by orchard!
pumpkin pie ice cream, it’s like a velvety frozen piece of pumpkin pie
So difficult to choose, it really depends on the day! But probably my all-time favorite is Univ of Wisconsin – Madison’s Babcock Hall’s “Berry Alvarez” (named after football coach, now athletic director). With all kinds of berries swirled into so rich and creamy vanilla base – it is unbelievable!
Gosh it’s so hard to pick but I’m going to have to support my hometown brand (and Oprah’s fave apparently, too!). Graeter’s ice cream – black cherry to be specific! Every bite is so creamy due to their small batch french pot process…omg to die for!!!
By the way, I <3 your blog and would love a copy of this book. I just got a KA ice cream attachment last Friday and made my first batch last night. This ice cream "bible" would be PERFECT to add to my collection! Thanks!

or homemade raspberry icecream by my Aunt LuAnn!
Right outside of town there is this little peach stand that sells all kinds of fresh produce, not just peaches, and they have the most AMAZING fresh peach ice cream!! Oh it is to die for!
single flavor? has to be chocolate. but I do like adding mix ins too – PB, caramel, cooke dough . . .
Nocciola (Hazelnut) gelato in a little gelataria located somewhere in the ancient town of Orvieto, Italy.
Nothing like authentic taste, huh? :)
I think my favorite would have to be chocolate. I like to add milk or soy milk to ice cream until it becomes crystallized rather than creamy. If the milk and the ice cream are both very cold, it takes on more of an Italian ice consistency. I love Italian ice more than ice cream, though. My favorite of that is a fudge brownie flavor, but I can’t seem to get anymore of that. The shop that sold it closed and the owners moved back to New York. I’ll keep looking for some more of that! :)
My favorite icecream flavor (right now) has to be chocolate chip cookie dough. Mmm!
My favorite is my mom’s homemade raspberry icecream. We let the kids pick the raspberries for the ice cream off of her bushes. The ice cream and the raspberries are divine.

Since then I’ve become a huge fan of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food, the Caramel sauce, marshmallow and fudge fish…I just can’t resist!
Read regularly but have never commented before…. Homemade mint chocolate chip : )
I really love ice cream but I’d say my favorite flavor is Coffee Crumble. It is made up of several combinations of flavor that I enjoy, creamy coffee, sweet chocolate pieces, and nuts to add some crunch. Hmm.. :)
chocolate chip!
oh it’s got to be mint chocolate chip, but if they don’t have it i’ll take a cookie dough cone, thank you! lol
A big fan of Pralines and Cream from Baskin Robbins.

Wow, thanks for posting this recipe Annie and it’s so nice of you for giving away 4 of his cookbooks! I’ve had The Perfect Scoop on my wish list since it came out – I wanted it because the first ice cream recipe I made of his (from your blog of course) was my ALL-TIME FAVORITE recipe – CHOCOLATE ice cream! My husband has always disliked chocolate ice cream (how, right?) but once he took one bite of the homemade chocolate ice cream he fell in love with it and it’s his favorite too!!! :)

Call me boring, but my absolute favorite flavor of ice cream is a simple chocolate chip. When I was younger I didn’t care for it but while in Italy I fell in love with strachiatella gelato and I haven’t stopped since. There’s this amazing old ice cream shop (Mashti Malones, in Hollywood on La Brea) and they make the most amazing chocolate chip ice cream that tastes unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. They use all natural ingredients and the flavor of all the ice creamy goodness shines through. Oh my, I think I may need to pick some up on my way back to work!
Cookies and Cream
there’s a place in columbus called Jeni’s that makes the most delicious ice cream with all ohio-made ingredients. The absolute best flavor is salty caramel…mmm.
Holy Moly! People come out of the woodwork when there’s a giveaway, huh? :) The best ice cream I’ve ever had in my life is Godiva’s Belgian Dark Chocolate. Alas, I can no longer find it anywhere! :(
rocky road…yum!
Cookies and Cream!
How can I pick just one?! It’s probably Mint Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter ice cream with bits of Reese’s mixed it. YUM!
My favorite is Pistachio. We used to eat it all the time when I was a kid…they always had it at the Chinese restaurants we went to. And…now I want ice cream!
Just reading all the comments makes me hungry. I think my favorite all time Ice Cream has to be Homemade Mexican Vanilla. Don’t get me wrong I love all different flavors of Ice Cream and I don’t think you could ever go wrong with adding a ton of “loot” to the ice cream but there is truly nothing better than the pure taste of Vanilla. Heaven would be a good description. But the book you suggested looks amazing! Going to have to go and find it!
Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food…..SO sweet but SO good!
I like Nestles Toll House chocolate chip cookie dough!
My favorite flavor is hands down… B&J PHISH FOOD! The delicious combination of creamy chocolate ice cream with swirls of caramel & marshmallow topped off with those yummy fudge fishies, its simply to die for!

Homemade strawberry ice cream with fresh strawberries…YUM!!!
I have to go with a classic…mint chocloate chip. Yum!
Without a doubt – homemade peach w/ fresh Alabama peaches!

Homemade. Any kind. But preferably with lots of chocolate and strawberries and hot fudge.
There is a ice-cream shop in a nearby town called Screaming Mimi’s…they make something called Absolutely Almond that I cannot get enough of, good thing they are not closer, it is DANGEROUS stuff!

Ooooh! I waaaaant! I just got an ice cream maker a month ago and have been itching for this book, for serious!
Surprisingly, the best flavor I’ve made so far is chocolate, which is funny because I don’t even like chocolate ice cream. But THIS chocolate ice cream was so rich and chocolaty! Dreyer’s take note! I topped it with strawberry sauce for an extra oomph of delicious.
I Love Cinnamon-Buns Ice cream! I guess it’s kind of like snickerdoodle cookie dough batter, caramel, cinnamon, and vanilla ice cream… yum!
Chocolate dipped in blackberry hard shell!!! I use to get it at the beach when I was little and have not had it in about 15 years. I still remember how good it was a would give anything to have it again.

But visiting Puerto Rico a couple of months ago we went to a place called Piu Bello for gelato (my first time ever having it!) and first I tried Choco-Hazelnut and proclaimed that as my absolute new favorite. Then the next time we went back I decided to try another flavor. Also, your post is so timely, I was just looking at Lebowitz’s blog on pistachio gelato (my grandmother’s 81st birthday is in two weeks, and pistachio is her favorite and she rarely gets it homemade). I was debating whether it was worth purchasing the pistachio paste, and now I’m going to! Thanks :)

After living for a year in Europe, my mom flew over to visit me, and we took a trip to Paris. One evening, we stopped at an ice cream shop near Notre Dame for a late afternoon snack so we split a grapefruit gelato. We sat along the Seine, enjoying our delicious treat and listening to a band play along the river bank. The gelato was so good we skipped dinner all together and went back for a second helping! I don’t know whether it was the picturesque setting, finally seeing my mom, or simply the great flavor (or all three!), but it was hands down the best ice cream I’ve ever had!

This is easy. A common flavor that doesn’t feel quite so common to me – mint chocolate chip. Green mint chocolate chip. I’m not big on unnatural additives but there is just something about that green ice cream glowing back at me. It takes me back to special days when my parents would surprise my sisters and I with a visit to the ice cream parlor. My mom with my sisters would be sampling up just about every flavor while, while my dad and I – little hand in giant paw – would do one simple walk down that lovely ice cream counter. Then suddenly he’d stop and look down at me – a wink, a cute little smile that only my father could give, and then an order for two cones of the green stuff would be placed. I love that green stuff.

My all time favorite was a Häagen-Dazs limited edition – Vanilla Caramel Brownie. Vanilla ice cream with chunks of brownie and swirls of caramel mixed in. Annie, do you remember where you bought your pistachio cream? I’m having a hard time finding it for sale in the US… I may even resort to bribing a friend in Italy to look for it there and send me a few jars!
I bought mine online, I believe from Dean and Deluca, but last time I looked for it, it was no longer available. I would look online and eventually I’m hoping to post about how to make your own…but first I’ll need to find some to compare it with! Good luck.
OMG Annie! I just made this gelato! Its unbelievable! I used “Crema al Pistacchio Verde di Bronte” that I got in Lago di Como. It tastes just like Sicilia! Thanks for sharing!
This gelato is amazing. I pop up to King Arthur Flour’s store to take a class once/ year or so and picked up pistachio paste last time because it sounded so appealing. I love pistachio!! I only wish there were more tried and true recipes using the paste. What an amazing flavor. This gelato was our number 1 favorite last year. Incredible taste. KAF sells the paste via the catalogue too, I think, if you don’t live close by. Tomorrow’s gelato in my house will basil. I have an abundance of it in the garden. Hope the flavor is good!
Good to know they sell the paste too. Thanks!
