Oven fries may seem like a simple side dish that just about anyone could whip up with no problem.  At least for me, this was not always true.  I have made baked oven fries many times in the past and they were always okay, but they weren’t “Oh my gosh, I love love love them” good.  A large part of this was due to the fact that they had a mushy texture.  If you’re aiming for a half decent substitute for real French fries, chances are you aren’t going for mushy.

I learned the trick of soaking your potato wedges in water before baking the fries and that definitely helped with the texture, but they still weren’t perfect.  Well, leave it to the brilliant people of Cook’s Illustrated to perfect the technique because now I have the kind of baked oven fries that I’ve been dying for.  These are so great that they have caused me to put burgers on the menu several weeks in a row, just so we could have them again.  Of course they can be eaten with more than just burgers though – and they should be!

If you’re interested in winning a free copy of this cookbook I’ve been spending so much quality time with, here’s your chance!   Leave a comment on this post with the answer to this question:  What dish or meal do you love enough to put it on your menu weekly?

The Rules: One entry per person, will ship to U.S. residents only.  Commenting will close on Saturday, February 27 at 10:00 pm, EST.  One winner will be chosen at random and announced next week.  Good luck!

  • Yield about 4 servings

3 russet potatoes (about 24 oz. total), peeled and cut lengthwise into even sized wedges
5 tbsp. vegetable, canola or peanut oil, divided
¾ tsp. kosher salt, plus more to taste
¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste

  • 01

Preheat the oven to 475˚ F. Place the potato wedges in a large mixing bowl. Cover with hot water; soak for 10-30 minutes. Put 4 tablespoons of the oil onto a heavy, rimmed baking sheet. Tilt the sheet side to side to evenly coat the pan with oil (a pastry brush can also help with this). Sprinkle the pan evenly with the salt and pepper. Set aside.

  • 02

Drain the potatoes. Spread the wedges out on layers of paper towels or on clean kitchen towels. Pat dry with additional towels. Wipe out the now empty bowl so it is dry. Return the potatoes to the bowl and toss with the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Arrange the potato wedges on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 5 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake until the bottoms of the potatoes are spotty golden brown, 15-20 minutes, rotating the baking sheet after 10 minutes. Using a metal spatula and tongs, flip each potato wedge keeping them in a single layer. Continue baking until the fries are golden and crisp, 5 -15 minutes. Rotate the pan as needed to ensure even browning.

  • 03

When the fries are finished baking, transfer to a paper-towel lined plate to drain some of the grease. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm.

Homemade pizza…I made a whole wheat dough that makes enough for two pizzas. It waits in the fridge and makes an easy and tasty dinner with some veggies thrown on top.

  5. Christy says:

Every week we have a “veggie plate” which usually consists of some roasted potatoes (or sweet potatoes); salad, and some other green vegetable or squash. We love to eat a veggie plate full of variety. I’ll definitely try the oven fries on a veggie plate soon!

Sounds pretty strange to some, but we LOVE brussell sprouts. It’s a weekly must have vegetable. I roast them with olive oil, salt and pepper and then sprinkle a good aged balsamic vinegar over them after roasting.
By the way, the fries look great. I’m trying them tonight!

  10. lori says:

easy! my husband’s caesar salad. he makes the croutons from scratch (as in, even homemade bread), and he coddles the egg for the dressing, which he makes carefully from scratch. we’ve eaten in 3-4 times/week for the last 5 years, and i’m so spoiled i can never order caesar salad in a restaurant – it’s never as good.

  11. Jean-Marie says:

I would have to say my pork chops (which are baked in a jalapeno, brown sugar and butter sauce which has lots of “warm” spices such as cinnamon). I learned the recipe from a local restaurant and we love it here – my husband makes it for the firehouse too and the guys go crazy. MMMMmmm – it goes amazing with sweet potatoes.

Just found your blog and have to say THANK YOU!!! I gave up blogging awhile ago but now I am back reading yours. Can’t wait for my son’s birthday – I will be baking some of your goodies for sure – great job!

The fries look awesome; I just tried making oven baked fries last week and couldn’t seem to get them to crisp up. I’ll definitely be trying this method. The meal that seems to end up on my menu every week is enchiladas or tacos. One of those two are always on the weekly menu.

  18. Casie says:

beef and baked beans w/onion Yum Yum!!!

  19. Laura says:

Baked chicken with some sort of starch (maybe those potatoes!) and a veggie and if I’m feeling especially industrious, salad. Comfort food.

A close second is homemade taco salads. I use my own seasoning for either ground beef or ground poultry, but one could use grilled chicken, steak, etc. or soaked and cooked beans, pinto, pink, kidney are good, too. The key here is to use a variety of lettuces, plenty of thinly sliced red cabbage and grated carrots for crunch. I make a homemade dressing with plenty of lime juice, add olives, tomatoes, avocado and cheese, but the topper that makes the whole thing delightful is a hearty sprinkling of sunflower seeds. The flavor combos are delightful.

I really enjoy your website! When the intense class I am taking is over (Physiology), I am going to make the banana bread waffles.

Thank you! I’ve had the same problem with oven fries – they *seem* like they should be easy, but they always disappoint.

    My weekly dish is probably rice and beans – it is surprisingly delicious, but it is also economical, kid-friendly, very, very fast, and always leaves leftovers for quesaidillas, taco salads, etc;

I don’t always do that every week for my family now, but another meal we really like and have often is Honey Lime Enchiladas. So flavorful and tasty. I love trying new enchiladas and this is definitely my favorite. Actually, I’m trying your Chicken Enchiladas tonight for dinner! Yum.

  163. Ming Tsai’s Crazy Noodles! We are obsessed with it. It’s easy to whip up and has just the right amount of sweet, tang, salt and spice!

It’s a tie between tacos and breakfast. We eat breakfast for dinner WAY too much in this house.

  165. Crystal says:

I COULD eat taco salad once a week, but I think my family would think I was getting lazy or losing creativity. I also would love potato soup (it has chunky vegetables and cheese…oooOOOOOOooooo!).

Thank you so much for your blog. It has been a delight to read and has prompted some wonderful creations in our kitchen. I’m just curious how you find time to do all of this AND care for a toddler. Keep up the great work!

My boyfriend’s family’s chili recipe. It’s loaded with flavor and tastes even better the following days for leftovers! I eat it over rice, with chips, make chili-dogs, or just add a bit of cheese and enjoy.

  329. christine weeks says:

Anything pasta……..my two teenage boys LOVE pasta!

  330. We almost always have meat sauce on our weekly menu. Easy enough for my hubby to make and quick enough a post-workout meal when I’m starving. =)

  331. Amy says:

    Any kind of pasta!

  332. Dena says:

Just found your blog and I love it. I have pasta at least 3 times a week – should probably cut down but I love it so much!

  333. kitty says:

every week i roast veggies, and every week, that ends up being my favorite meal of the week.

i just recently started following your blog, and enjoy it a lot! thank you.

  334. Liz says:

The one item that is on our weekly menu are grilled cheese sandwiches. It sounds really basic, but I like to use premium cheeses (fontina or Gruyere) with sourdough bread or do a variation of a “melt” (patty or tuna). The cold Colorado winters make me crave comfort foods like grilled cheese and a nice bowl of soup. Thanks for the chance to win!

  335. Jennifer says:

Cajun Chicken Pasta or Basil Chicken Pasta….both are so yummy!!! :o)

  336. CambriaW says:

I love the recipe for Curried Lentils from Martha Stewart’s website. When I make it (which is pretty often) I eat it every day…sometimes twice a day, till it’s gone.

  337. Kelly S. says:

Pizza makes onto our menu weekly.

  338. michelle says:

our classic sunday night dinner consists of popcorn, cheese and crackers, cut fruit, veggies and hummus — the kids love it and i don’t have to cook :)

  339. Marina Laura says:

I love to make& eat fried chicken with salad. And fried potatoes, of course.

  340. Christina says:

Pesto Pasta – so delicious :)

  341. Cathy M says:

Its hard to get home cooked meals all the time since I’m so busy with school, but French Toast is definitely something I could eat for breakfast more than once a week!

  342. Jenny W. says:

We literally eat some variation of tacos on a weekly basis!

  343. am denton says:

mushroom soup!!! or ribs….one is obviously quicker to throw together than the other! But I love them both!!!

  344. Kate says:

Would love this cookbook! We eat grilled chicken soft tacos almost weekly in the summer, spaghetti with homemade marinara sauce almost weekly in the winter. Always yummy!!

  345. Nora says:

I always make a nice big pot of chili. It’s so easy and always tasty!!

  346. Sarah says:

Tacos or any Mexican food. Yum!

I can’t wait to try these potatoes. I’ve been looking for a better way to bake fries w/o one dark and crispy side and this might be it!

  347. Penny says:

My husband is not usually a pasta fan but after making your spagetti and meatballs, he has been changed. I used the same sauce for lasagna this week and it was awesome. So pasta is our new weekly menu option.

  348. sarah says:

    chicken enchiladas. YUM!

  349. Stacy says:

I guess I’m another for taco salad! My new favorite addition to it, black beans! How did I not know I would like it before! Mmmm!

  350. Alison says:

I always do some Hotlink-pepper/onions-beans-rice variation. Quick & easy and easily broken down into individual items for my picky 4 year old.

  351. aliza says:

Fried, breaded cutlets (schnitzel) in bread with Hummus!!!
My husbands absolute favorite supper. He would be happy with that EVERY DAY! I also happen to love it like that but sometimes I’ll chop it into a salad with the best chicken salad dressing e-v-e-r.

so many comments! so many readers! ur so popular!

  352. Stephanie says:

Fajitas… I’ll make ‘real’ fajitas with the usual stuffing: chicken, peppers, onions, etc. The next day, I’ll serve it over rice… or make pasta and add the stuffing.

  353. Maggi says:

Easy. Slow-roasted salmon. We have it twice a week, every week.

About the potatoes… It seems like an awful lot of oil for ‘baked’ fries. It seems like they are frying, just not deep-fat fried. I wonder how much oil french fries actually soak up when deep-fat fried. Would it be more, less or just about 1/4 Cup + a Tablespoon that this recipe is calling for? Especially over only three potatoes.

I can see why you like them so. :)

  354. Lisa L. says:

Sauteed chicken breasts with a lemon, white wine, butter, cream sauce, all topped with roasted grape tomatoes!!

  355. Laura says:

Potatoes – baked, mashed, fried – it doesn’t matter. I just have to get my potato fix.

  356. John L says:

    Pan-fried steak and creamed spinach!

  357. Tracie says:

Tacos have been a weekly dinner, but not because *I* love them so much, but because it’s sure-fire for my toddler.

  358. Kara says:

Sweet potatoes and broccoli. It may be a little random, but it’s so tasty together!

  359. Season says:

Pasta, in some form or another. It’s quick, easy, and tasty.

  360. I would have to say a fav right now is chicken and rice. It’s so easy to prepare, and most of the time the kids enjoy it. I would like some new recipes to throw in my stash, though.

  361. Laura says:

Right now, it’s my grandma’s chicken and noodles! Such a delicious comfort meal, especially on a cold day!

  362. Katie says:

These look great! I’d have to say that I always have pasta with a lemon butter sauce with snow peas in the mix at least once a week. Yummy!

  363. Jillian says:

banana pancakes! they make me feel like a kid (and are a quick way to use that last banana before it goes totally brown). have been enjoying your blog. thanks for the chance to win!

  364. Cassie says:

Annie, thank you thank you THANK YOU! My husband is becoming more and more frustrated with the frozen variety of French fries, since they NEVER get crispy. I’ve always had the same problem when I make them homemade, too — mushy and not crispy enough. We’re having burgers next week and I am definitely trying these!

I try new recipes so frequently that there are very few that make it onto my menu week after week, but one thing I DO make all the time is Tuscan grilled chicken sandwiches. They’re topped with artichokes, sliced roma tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and pesto mayonnaise, and they are delicious! We love them.

    Thanks for the giveaway chance!

  365. Molly says:

    Turkey sausage spaghetti!

  366. Elizabeth KS says:

sunday nights are stuffed shell night in our casa! sometimes with sausage, sometimes spinach, but in general, a weekly stuffed shell/manicotti makes ours a very happy household! and maybe also chicken-in-a-clay-pot. thanks!

  367. Katie says:

Turkey tacos and veggie burgers are both weekly meals in our house…both fast to make and pretty healthy

  368. Jennie says:

Lately I’ve grown accustomed to a lot of variety in my menus, so it’s hard for me to think of something I’d want to eat every week. I really love enchiladas, though. :)

  369. Annie says:

Not all of the oil is absorbed into these fries either. The majority of it stays on the pan and keeps them from sticking. Sure, I wouldn’t call them health food, but they are most definitely healthier than something fried in a pot of oil.

  370. Well….I can’t say that I cook anything every week…I am always changing it up…but I would say that when in a rush….BBQ chicken Sammies…that I make in the Deep Covered Baker in the microwave in under 15 minutes…are a hit all the time!!!!

  371. Kelly says:

    Tacos or enchiladas!

  372. Amy says:

Homemade pizza, with different toppings most every week depending on what we have around.

  373. Sharon says:

    Margherita pizza!

  374. Natasha says:

Chicken Enchilladas. They are so easy and delicious!

  375. Caroline says:

My husband and I love lemon chicken. It’s just a marinated chicken cooked on the stove-top, but it never fails to be delicious, and healthy. We love to have it with rice. It’s so tasty that I serve it in the pan so we can dip the chicken in the remaining juices. Scrumptious.

  376. Laura says:

Tacos. Kids LOVE them and it gives me a good excuse to make guacamole!

  377. Kristin says:

I love homemade pizza, so it makes an appearance at least once a week!

  378. Holly says:

Sadly, to say, macaroni and cheese. :)

  379. Rebecca Sell says:

So delicious – so satisfying…We have Steak Sandwich from Ina Garten every week. It might be for lunch on the weekend, or an open-faced version on a week night, but my family just LOVES it. It’s up to me to modify it to keep it from getting boring.

  380. Camille says:

    PIZZA! Every Friday!

  381. Kerstin says:

We usually have pasta twice a month, I think that’s what I make most often :) We really have a lot of variety!

  382. Elizabeth Alvarez says:

I must say I’m a big fan of soups. I only cook for one so I always have leftovers. My favorite soup right now is tomato bisque soup. So yummy!!! Its an easy meal when I come home late from work and don’t want to do anything fancy. I warm up some soup in the microwave and make myself some grill cheese ( I always have cheese in my house! Its a must!)

  383. Kat says:

My kids request either your bacon-egg-toast cups or your chocolate chip pancakes every Saturday morning. You are well loved in our house :)

My secondary answer would have to be my mom’s chicken a la’ king recipe from the old Betty Crocker cookbook (probably about 30-40 years old). It was comfort food for me, so I was super excited to cook it for my kids, and they love it as much as I did! The smell of the butter and the mushrooms and the bell pepper starts it off and the whole house gets excited, knowing what’s for dinner!

  384. Jessica says:

Chili and some sort of stir fry usually make it onto our table once a week! =)

  385. Maria says:

Tuna Fish Salad. I’ll explain. I’m in college and it’s not expensive to make, and relatively quick to put together. But the main reason- I love it! My mom used to make tuna fish salad every Friday (catholics), and I got used to eating it. I like to put olive oil, lemon, dijon mustard with oregano and that’s about it sometimes!

  386. Megan says:

I make a mean salad, but I would have to say that Ellie Krieger’s Stuffed Turkey Burgers make our menu every week. They are healthier than the normal burger, super easy, and oh-so-tasty.

  387. Nicole says:

Ratatouille – it’s great all year round. Served warm in the winter with parmensan cheese accompanied by warm, crusty bread or during warmer months at served at room temperature. It’s great because you can make it in the slow cooker and have an all veggie meal or serve as a side dish with grilled fish/chicken. Love your blog!!!

  388. Kara says:

Well, it’s not exactly the same food every week – but currently, I’d have to go with soup – mostly variations on black bean soup, with bread on the side. Simple, but with a little kick!

  389. ann says:

it’s a toss up between coq au vin or curry chicken with cauliflower! Yum!!!

  390. Elena says:

Creamy polenta with a fried egg on top. My husband and I cannot get enough of this insanely simple and satisfying meal.

  391. Lynsey says:

The other night I made Paual Deen’s pork chops with a chocolate rub, they were absolutely delicious! My husband has been requesting them since, so they will probably be making regular appearances in our weekly menu!

  392. Libby says:

Omelets are the main course every weekend!

  393. Mindy says:

mexican food!! :) between tacos, quesidillas, enchiladas (I still have to try you’re Benchiladas!!), we have mexican food at least once if not twice (or more, haha!!) a week in our house. :)

  394. Shanon says:

Hi Annie! This is also my favorite recipe for oven fries. I had been making oven fries for a long time and I received this recipe in a Cooks Illustrated magazine and was so impressed with the article that described all the experiments the woman did to come up with this recipe. I have been making them like this ever since. They are perfectly fluffy/airy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Yours look amazing!

  395. Charissa says:

Barefoot Contessa’s Mexican Chicken Soup. Delish!!

  396. Jaylene Mosley says:

Hamburgers….They are just to quick and easy and everyone will eat them. So I am very excited to try these french fries next time. Thanks

  397. Stephanie says:

  398. Lea says:

Tacos! But I think my husband is getting sick of them. He skipped them last night and took Raman noodles to work with him. He missed out on a good meal!

  399. Amy says:

Smitten Kitchen’s chicken marsala or roasted eggplant and mushroom pizza.

  400. Kelly says:

I could eat tacos almost every week! And since my husband and I are both picky…it helps that its one meal we ALWAYS agree on!

  401. Jennifer says:

My go-to meal is spaghetti or tacos. Both are quick and easy, and we have them almost every week!

  402. Angele says:

I have penne or rigatoni pasta in some variety or other (never red sauce) just about every week… and sometimes twice a week. There’s something about the size, shape, texture and ridged goodness that I can’t get enough of — with olive oil, parmesan, vegetables and Italian sausage… yum.

  403. Andrea says:

Usually mexican food, because I want the taste of homemade flour tortillas.

  404. Sandra says:

love your blog Annie !! Every Thursday for us now is BLT’S and Fries I am going to try it this new way though, I always left my fries in cold water in fridge for 30 minutes covered with ice.. :)

  405. Tasha says:

At least one day a week I always make Chicken and homemade noodles. My husband is from PA and we are currently living in GA. He grew up eating that meal which his grandmother made and I have to say I ate her version and it is FANTASTIC! He gets very home sick, so I wanted to do something for him. So, I practiced cooking that for a year until I was able to get it done to his liking, which is just like his grandmothers and we absolutely LOVE IT. And I must say, I enjoy making homemade noodles, I’ll never go back to packaged egg noodles again.

  406. Catherine says:

Our go-to weekly meal in the winter is grilled cheese and soup!

  407. Jo says:

Kielbasa & Potatos (everything cut bite size). ALMOST weekly!

  408. Rebecca says:

Taco salad is up there…although pasta is right by its side. :)

  409. LisaGrace says:

Our favorite meal is one that my mom made up, and it’s my husband’s favorite, we call it Bacon, Pasta, Parmesan! http://thealsburys.blogspot.com/2009/09/bacon-pasta-parmesan.html

  410. Hi there.!!I have recently found your site, and love it!!! You make some yummy stuff. I could eat our Chicken Rice Casserole every night. Well maybe not that often, but its super good.

  411. Katie says:

  412. Kim-Erin says:

Meat Jun!!!! Thanks for the awesome give away!

  413. Nikki says:

Tacos or enchiladas with lots of guacamole & homemade salsa.

  414. Delilah says:

In the summer we live on grilled chicken salad with fresh veggies & herbs from our little container garden. Yum! I can’t wait for summer to roll around to eat that weekly again.

  415. mareejeanne says:

tacos or pizza or burgers! And I love potato fries, but am always tinkering with the recipe/technique to get it just right. Maybe this will be the one!

  416. Misty says:

I have to say my ‘infamous’ white girl tacos! :

  417. Morgan says:

I find that I am always making cheese sauces! My friends and family love the sauce on vegetables, meats, pasta, and as a dip for bread! I love how easy they are to make, and since the base is so simple, you can really add any type of cheese/seasoning to change the taste so that it fits with whatever the main dish is.

  418. Misty says:

when I say white girl ‘above’, I mean, I have yet to make them ‘authentic’ enough.. trying to perfect that :)

  419. Brie says:

Oh my gosh, SO many comments! I would like to have a great recipe for tomato alfredo sauce. That ALWAYS sounds good to me with some whole wheat pasta and garlic bread!

  420. Andrea says:

We make tilapia fish tacos in my house all the time! Yummy, healthy and oh-so-easy.

  421. Amy B says:

Chicken Parm! I did make your herb chicken and creamy orzo last week and I am thinking that needs to be a weekly staple.

  422. JenniferC says:

I could eat pizza every night of the week! This recipe looks great, thanks for posting it. Can’t wait to try it. My attempts in the past have resulted in the mushy potato fries you described, so I’m glad to hear this solves that problem.

  423. Julie says:

Julia Child’s crepe recipe… it is the best one I have tried so far and I make them on a weekly basis… there is nothing more satisfying then a warm, sugary crepe.

  424. JACKIE says:

My thing lately has been country fried steak, unfortuantly we have been running around for the last couple of months we never know what we are having for dinner.

  425. Julie says:

Mmm fries! My pick would be sweet potato fries with basil salt and garlic mayonnaise for dipping!

    Julie @ Willow Bird Baking

  426. Sally says:

I don’t have anything that I fix weekly as I wind up eating leftovers five days out of the week as is! But I do tend to fix some type of bean dish each week–navy beans and bacon soup, black bean with peach salsa soup, Tuscan style shrimp with white beans, chick pea salad, etc.

I love the American Test Kitchen cookbooks as much for their techniques as for their recipes. I’ve learned so much from the one I do have.

  427. Lucy says:

It has to be roasted cornish hens and potatoes flavored w/garlic , oregano, thyme and lemon juice.

  430. Jill says:

My husband makes these fantastic little Mexican pizzas — just ground turkey cooked with tomatoes and spices, then piled on top of flour tortillas, sprinkled with cheese, and baked until crispy. We love this meal — I get really excited when he says he’s going to make it!

  431. Ashley says:

My daughters favorite dinner is english muffin pizzas and salad, so as long as she’ll willingly eat it, it’s on the menu!

  432. Elie says:

Tacos, tacos and more tacos. I think my husband is starting to get tired of them though. Time to more foward.
Love your blog by the way. Everything I have tried has been just wonderful!

  433. Mel says:

We have burritos at least once per week, because you can change up the ingredients based on the season! Plus they are easy to make and everyone can customize their burrito. My personal favorite is our breakfast burrito with a side of fruit. :)

  434. Emma says:

we eat pizza at my house every week! often homemade, sometimes frozen (i must confess). great give away!

  435. Leslie says:

oatmeal~~i eat it every single day for breakfast, and never get tired of it

  436. Laura says:

We love broccoli chicken divan from the back of the Campbell’s cream of broccoli soup can. We serve it with white rice and salad on the side. It’s sooo good, and the leftovers are twice as nice the next day. Plus, it literally takes 5 minutes to throw together and then you just have to bake it.

  437. Jenifer says:

a dish that is always on my weekly menu is an over easy egg on seasoned rice with steamed broccoli and occassionally a store bought eggroll. i know it sounds ridiculous, but it is sooo good! i find myself craving it if i go too long without it. the well seasoned rice is the key, i use lemon pepper, garlic powder and instead of water i use vegetable stock (chicken stock would probably be even better though!). it’s so good! when you break the yolk of the egg it makes a sauce for the broccoli and rice and it is to. die. for.

  438. Michele says:

I think it would have to be spaghetti. We LOVE it along with some yummy garlic bread.

  439. Sarah says:

My mom gave me a recipe for Broccoli Bacon Pasta (with parmesan cheese and garlic!). YUM! I can always use a new cookbook!

  440. Sarah says:

  441. Debbie says:

My kiddos love PB & J so they get that once a week!

  442. Karla says:

I love Chipotle Mexican restaurant, and I have figured out how to make my own “Chipotle Chicken Burrito” that sends me running to my kitchen instead of for a $6 burrito–love, love, love them! Cilantro-lime rice and cool guacamole! Yum! Fortunately, when I make this meal, I make enough for several meals because it is yummy even left over!

  443. Sara says:

I don’t think I have one recipe I can make every week, especially for dinner. We do have some pasta dish once a week and I have few I shuffle between. For lunch I can eat a good turkey avocado sandwich every day!

  444. Allison says:

I have a fabulous recipe of a meat ragu sauce (best i’ve tasted yet!) that we have on pasta atleast once a week. Its ground turkey and mushrooms and carrots… I could go on forever about it :) We do oven fries or crash potatoes atleast 2ice a week too.

  446. Tenay says:

Sausage Pasta. Very easy and fast and very tasty.

  447. Tami says:

I love pho! The place I get it from is closer to work than to home, so I only get to eat it for lunch (unless I go a little out of my way & pick it up on the way home). But this means hot, yummy goodness for lunch for 2 lunches in a row since it’s too much for one sitting.

  448. Mandy Davis says:

    Tacos or burritos! Most definitely!!!

  449. Jenny Dryfhout says:

  468. Erin says:

One meal… in all honesty, I love cooking. I love it I love it I love it! The kitchen is MY “man-room”… lol! But if I were to pick ONE meal to have every week, it would be homemade Vietnamese pho.

I finally perfected my broth and can’t get enough of it. The trials of perfecting the broth wasn’t even that bad. I’ll even take a bowl of pho from a restaurant… as long I have my weekly bowl.

I’ve recently turned pescatarian so I now have to perfect my SEAFOOD broth for pho. ;-) Think I can do it?

Oh and I’d LOVE to have this cookbook in my collection… ;-)

  469. Emily says:

In our home, a deconstructed spicy tuna roll salad (say that five-times fast!) is on our menu each week. My husband and I are polar-opposites in the kitchen; I follow recipes exactly as they are written, and he’s far more loose and intuitive. We created this recipe together- it’s not only delicious, but fun to make and reflective of both our cooking personalities.

  470. Jennifer says:

These look delicious, anything potatoes is my favorite. That’s probably why my favorite dish is gnocci – I could eat it every day!

  471. Christine says:

Enchiladas. Anything leftover can go in enchiladas. Almost.

    I love Cooks Illustrated.

  472. I love different recipes so much that it has to be GREAT or demanded by my children to make it on my meal plan once every two weeks…. let alone every week! My current favorite is Chicken Thighs all Puttenesca (recipe on my blog).

  473. Ashley says:

Baked halibut with olive oil, salt and pepper. Yum!

  474. Vreinhart says:

My mom’s goulash!! So easy to make and tastes even better as 2-3 day leftovers!

  478. Jill says:

    lasagna or pizza.

  479. Athena says:

I love to make a veggie scramble for breakfast on Sat. morning for me and my boyfriend. We make it together by chopping up all sorts of veggies like mushrooms, tomatoes, green peppers, zucchini and add them to 4 or 5 eggs in a pan with monterey jack cheese, and some rosemary. Yum!

The one recipe that makes it on our menu weekly is arroz-con-pollo. I learned this recipe after spending wonderful quality time with my mother-in-law who learned how to make this authentic recipe while living in Ecuador. Its a great during-the-week recipe as most of the ingredients can be ready in advance (boil and cut the chicken, cook and refridge the rice, chop the veggies). Then when you are ready – stir fry! It makes our house more like home every time!

  616. stacey says:

Kielbasa! With buttered noodles, with potatoes, with fries, with anything!

I have to say, even though it takes a few hours, I make lasagna almost every Sunday. My recipe is so amazing, I just can’t pass it up! (It doesn’t help that I think my fiancee fell in love with my lasagna before he fell in love with me!)

  629. Ginger Guilfoyle says:

Colcannon! I’m not Irish, but I love this traditional Irish dish. Born and raised in Idaho, this dish completely appeals to this potato-loving gal’s heart. Potatos, cabbage (or kale) and bits of salty ham or bacon, oh and don’t forget the butter! Heaven on a plate. If my hips and rear-end would let me, I have this meal two or three times a week!

Pizza…almost every Friday night is pizza night. I make the pizza dough into small individual pizzas then everyone chooses their own toppings. My favorite is a white pizza with roasted veggies. So glad it’s Friday…pizza is in my future!!!

  633. Christy says:

Island Chicken hands down. It is fast, easy and simple and even my pickest eaters devour it.

  634. Christa Z says:

I love making your chicken enchiladas. I thought they would be too spicy w/ 2 jalapenos (yes I am a bit of a woose obviously) but they are just fantastic. Honestly though I would do those bi-weekly w/ the chicken parmesian, or the eggplant parmesian on the weekend, or even with the baked ziti. Do you see a pattern here? You should I love your recipes! Love what you do and must thank you for the envigorated evening meals!

  635. Melissa says:

I have a “cheesy orzo” recipe that I make that my husband regularly requests. It is like a refined, mellow Mac & Cheese (made with parmesan, shallots, and fresh herbs). Neither of us would complain if we ate it weekly. :)

  636. Alli says:

Pizza. My husband discovered he could make his own and that was it. We now have it almost every week, but I don’t complain too much because it means one night I don’t have to worry about getting dinner on the table!

  642. cindy says:

  643. Therese says:

    Buttermilk Waffles on Sat mornings

I had been looking for a recipe that were like a Mother’s Day brunch we used to go to. I’ve tested different recipes until I ran across a Cook’s Illustrated version. Bingo! That was it. My favorite way would be with slightly sweetened whipped cream with almond extract and sliced fresh strawberries. Or that same whipped cream with homemade blueberry pie filling. Ok, at that point its more a dessert. :)

I’d make a double recipe and freeze the leftovers for the rest of the week. Then toast them up like Eggo waffles. AWESOME!

  644. manizor says:

Balsamic Chicken and mashed potatoes. YUM!!! It’s always a hit and my hubby asks for it regularly. When I try to switch things up a bit, he is disappointed. So it’s a winner!

  648. Bridget says:

I mill my own wheat with a flour mill, so I use fresh whole wheat flour in my cooking quite frequently. One of my favorite recipes is my own for whole wheat chocolate chip pancakes. I use the freshly milled whole wheat flour, but I also add navy beans to the mill to make bean flour. The beans combined with the wheat makes a complete protein which makes me happy. The kids can’t taste the navy beans at all!!! I make the pancakes for breakfast at least twice a week and for dinner on busy soccer nights about once a week!!

  649. Debbie says:

My husband’s favorite is Chicken Broccoli Casserole and would LOVE it if I made it once a week. It’s delicious and has a hint of curry in it. Mmm. Mine is probably Sweet and Sour Meatballs, but since hubby isn’t as big of a fan, it doesn’t get made nearly as often as I would like. *sad* :)

  650. Michaela says:

Cinnamon toast! It’s one of those ultimate comfort foods that I’ve loved since childhood, and I find myself making it at least two mornings a week for breakfast.

  651. Megan says:

Cheesy Chicken, the title doesn’t do the dish justice. It of course has chicken and cheese (Velveeta, creamy goodness) but also has a bit of zip (by adding Rotel diced tomatoes and chiles). It also has a can of cream of mushroom soup and corn for a Southwestern kick. Delicious. You serve it over noodles and with a slice of garlic toast. My absolute favorite food and an easy go-to meal!

  652. Drea says:

Homemade nachos. I grill chicken that has been marinated in salsa and put it on a bed of homemade corn tortilla chips & topped with cheese. Seriously, I could make this for dinner every day and the hubs would be happy. :)

  653. Sarah says:

Risotto! I love the texture and there are an unlimted number of flavor combinations. Too bad my husband doesn’t feel the same way!

  654. Leslie says:

Homemade Marinara and pasta! No one in my house seems to ever get tired of this meal.

Pizza…at home! Preferably with mushrooms and fresh baby spinach.

  657. Marie Brandt says:

  658. Kira says:

Black Bean Tortilla Casserole. It’s so easy to make, cheesy, but also healthy.

  659. Xuan says:

Curry chicken with jasmine rice. Minimal effort and delicious!

  660. Kris says:

Homemade pizza! We could eat this several times a week but then I would need to work out more.

Can’t wait to try the potatoes.

  666. Linda V says:

I make a sweet sausage minestrone with totelleni, and artichoke that I could eat every week (well alone with warm bread). Using turkey sausage I feel it’s fairly healthy and tastes wonderful!

  667. Chris says:

    Black Bean Quesadillas!

  668. Liss says:

It’s a Campbells soup recipe that is a chicken stir fry w/ Cream of Shroom soup. Soy sauce, carrots, broccoli..mmmmm, comfort food!

  672. Michelle says:

The only food that we have regularly year-round is picnic potatoes. We just can’t get enough of them! We also have chicken parmesan or pizza quite a bit.

  673. Jen T. says:

This might be cheating, but stir-fry! It comes together really quickly, and you can mix it up easily, with different veggies and meats. Really the only constants for me are marinating the meat in a blend of Italian dressing soy sauce. Really not traditional or authentic, but so good!

  674. Elizabeth says:

    Chicken and dumplins- yummm

  675. Rybread says:

It fluctuates at our house but right now we’re addicted to this chicken and rice casserole from Cooking Light. Its a great lightened version of a classic comfort food and we can eat it guilt free! Its delicious. You can find it on the website.

  676. Megan says:

Warm coconut chicken tortilla soup. Throw it all in the crockpot in the morning and tantalizing deliciousness tickles your nose as your come through the door in the evening. Mm-mm! I am also a firm believer of cornbread with any Mexican meal so when I feel ambitious I make Boston Market (aka half butter cake mix) cornbread. Yum!

  678. Diva1gina says:

Ratatouille…especially when the herbs and vegetables are coming fresh from my garden! But for hubby it would be Spanish Rice. And the kids would go with French Toast Strata with homemade Apple Cider Syrup. Yummm! We save that one for holidays and birthdays!

  679. Sarah says:

Ina Garten’s roasted shrimp and orzo. I think I could eat it daily.

  680. jaimeleben says:

I think tacos would have to be my answer. We just finished a dinner of beef tacos, your salsa, and my new margarita madeleines, and it was fantastic. We love Mexican food.

  681. Courtney says:

In the summer it’s burgers! My husband loves to grill so we probably have some kind of burger at least once a week. I”ll have to try these fries to go with them!

  682. Suzy says:

We love spagetti pie that it finds it’s way to our table at least once a week. It’s a dish I learned to make early on in our married life. I couldn’t compete with my husband’s Italian Nanna’s spagetti and meatballs so I made something she didn’t make. The family loved it! It’s become a signature dish at my table.

  683. Erin says:

Homemade pizza! It is usually on my weekly menu and I love trying different toppings.

I recently added my homemade pizza to our weekly menu, it is the best. These fries look amazing, I might have to add them too. Thanks.

  707. Recently, my husband’s grandmother taught me how to make her chicken and dumplings. She didn’t have a recipe, so I had to take notes and then go home a figure out the measurements. I did make a few tweaks of my own, but they are so good and so comforting. It makes enough for leftovers, so we have had chicken and dumplings the last two weeks and I think I’m going to put it back on the menu again this week!

  708. marjie says:

Baked tilapia. I love your website and my daughters are now fans too. My daughter living in chicago recently made your deep dish pizza with her boyfriend and now say they are spoiled and don’t think they will be able to go back to take out again. (they made it with lowfat turkey pepperoni!) Your gyro meals were amazing and every night since I have made a greek salad with your yummy dressing. The dressing I eat EVERYDAY..even drizzle it on sandwiches and wraps. YUM. Marjie

  709. Jolene says:

This is actually a dish but we always have a “freezer” meal. On Sunday when I am making dinner I make one “freezer” meal. It is usually enchilada’s, lasagna, chicken cordon bleu, pizza or chicken kiev. My hubby is going back to school and working full time so dinners have been tough lately. It is nice to have these quick meals on hand.

  710. JaniceJ says:

Spicy grilled chicken alfredo. The taste of grilled chicken and the spiciness makes the alfredo sauce easier to handle =]

  711. I love cheese tortellini/raviloli enough that it’s always on the menu once a week!

  712. Tiffany says:

One of my favorite dishes is a recipe I found on eatingwell.com. I don’t know exactly what it’s called, so I copied the recipe:

2 5-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breasts
    1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1 tablespoon canola oil
    1 medium shallot, minced
1 cup thinly sliced shiitake mushroom caps
2 tablespoons dry vermouth, or dry white wine
    1/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
    2 tablespoons heavy cream
2 tablespoons minced fresh chives, or scallion greens
Season chicken with pepper and salt on both sides.
Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook, turning once or twice and adjusting the heat to prevent burning, until brown and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 165°F, 12 to 16 minutes. Transfer to a plate and tent with foil to keep warm.
Add shallot to the pan and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add mushrooms; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 2 minutes. Pour in vermouth (or wine); simmer until almost evaporated, scraping up any browned bits, about 1 minute. Pour in broth and cook until reduced by half, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in cream and chives (or scallions); return to a simmer. Return the chicken to the pan, turn to coat with sauce and cook until heated through, about 1 minute.

It’s so good! I make it with your garlic rice and it is absolutely amazing!

  713. Jill says:

My most favorite (and super simple) recipes to make every week is a pork tenderloin cooked in the crock pot with a can of tropical friut salad dumped over the top, 1/2 C. of OJ and a splash of water. Cook on low for 8 hours and WOW! I serve it with wild rice and brussel sprouts. It’s one of my husband’s favorites, too.
