This recipe has long been one of my favorites. It is incredibly simple, quick, healthy, and delicious – what more can you ask for? I love to make this when I get home from a long, busy day because it is so quick and easy but still tastes great. It is even great as a leftover. I think the garnish really adds something special to this soup, so I wouldn’t recommend skipping it.

2 cans black beans, drained and rinsed
1½ cups vegetable broth
1 cup salsa
1 tsp. cumin
Salt and pepper, to taste
Sour cream, green onion, shredded cheese for garnishing

Combine beans, broth, salsa and cumin in a food processor.  Blend until fairly smooth.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.  Heat soup in a saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly heated. Put soup in bowls and garnish as desired.

  • Danielle Cronin

Made this last night… it was so easy and delicious. This will def be one of my “go-to” recipes when I’m short on time.

  • Robin

Annie, I found your blog through Bobbi + Mike :) They were our wedding photographers in December. And talent just runs among talented company, I guess, cause your blog is fantastic! :)

I love Panera’s black bean soup, and you’ve finally created a way to replicate that..and such a quick “go-to” recipe. Yay! :) And my husband is a big fan of your pumpkin blondies. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

  • Tiffany

We made this tonight for dinner— so EASY and QUICK! I made cheese quesadillas for a side. The soup was really good and had a great flavor.

  • Adam

I added half an onion, sauteed in the pot before adding everything else, just because I had one on hand. I also found it easier to use an emulsion blender than a food processer. Delicious recipe, I’m currently eating it with some corn chips.

  • Kristen

I have started reading your blog ever since Bobbi took your picture. I love this recipe, and have tried numerous other ones. I am a recent college grad and while some of your recipes scare me, most of them are reasonable, and healthy!
    Thanks so much!

    Hi Annie –

I’m addicted to checking your blog. Is there anything new today? I have never written before, but I just had to say how simple and easy this recipe is to make. And better yet, TASTY! I had a playdate today and made it for the Moms to have with a fresh baked roll. Very filling…thanks for a great recipe.

I love this so much, but it’s too bad I can’t get those small globules of black beany goodness from the very bottom of the blender T^T. This soup made my day! So easy, and I can just blend in the morning and heat up in the evening, maybe with some warmed up tortillas. So good for the ol’ pre-Xmas buffet scourge diet– protein, fiber, vitamins, and all that jargon.

    Will gladly trade you for other yum-delicious recipes : }

  • Hi Annie!

Came across your site and am a huge fan! Instead of ogling at all the tasty photos, I actually decided to give one a try, and what a great one to try. I just recently found that I adore black bean soup and as a college student, this is definitely a great way to make a hearty soup minus the time!

  • Jenelle

This soup was so simple and absolutely delicious! My hubby and I are both huge black bean fans and this has become a new go to recipe for our house:)

  • Amy

    Delish soup!

I thought your and/or your readers would like to know that I was able to successfully substitute 2 cans Annie’s organic re-fried black beans. I read the recipe and had to make it NOW so I just made it for lunch for me and my 3 young homeschooling boys with what I had on-hand. It’s a winner.

To your list of descriptions(quick, simple, healthy) I would add frugal! Kudos!

  • Totally made this with PW’s salsa…I added a bit more lime and hot sauce :) LOVE IT!! Thanks!

  • Jenni

I made this over the weekend for my lunch this week. I just had the first bowl a little while ago – it’s delicious!

  • Kristin

I’ve been following your blog since I saw your photos on bobbi+mike. This is the first recipe that I’ve tried so far and I absolutely love it! I’m in pharmacy school (currently on rotation) and am exhausted by the time I get home at the end of the day. This recipe was just what I needed for a quick and healthy meal after rotation. I don’t have a large food processor but I dumped everything into my blender and it worked perfectly. I can’t wait to try more of your recipes! Thanks :)

  • Just made this- LOVE it! So0o good, you are always full of great ideas- I added chopped jalapenos to add a kick! :)

  • Jenn

This was amazing, Annie! I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. Thannks!

  • Margaret

Annie this looks awesome! I want to make it tonight for some girlfriends, how many servings does this recipe yield?

  • Annie

That depends on the serving size, which varies a lot from person to person. 3-4 in our house, but it’s tough to say.

  • Brenna

I made this tonight and it was delicious… to answer Margaret’s question, I measured how much it made because I was adding up calories, and the recipe made about 4 cups of soup total. This is super tasty for being low calorie too! Less than 200 calories for a 1 cup serving!! Thanks for sharing this great recipe Annie!! I will definitely make this again!

  • Amy

Yum! I made this for my boyfriend and neighbor tonight…and we all loved it! I added a chopped clove of garlic and some chili pepper. Also, I didn’t have vegetable broth so I used chicken broth instead. Delicious and so easy! Thanks for the recipe!

  • Nancy

Annie, I just wanted to confirm what size of can of beans you are using. I am thinking it is 14oz, but please let me know. I am in Canada and our sizes are slightly different. I have 2 19oz cans set aside to make these tonight. Not sure if that is too much

  • Annie

The can sizes are indicated in the recipe.

  • Nancy

Thanks for replying Annie, but the can sizes are not in the recipe. It just says 2 cans black beans.

  • Nancy

Annie, found it! Thanks, I popped over to Allrecipes and it was in there. 15oz!

  • Annie

So sorry, I thought this comment was on the bean burritos I posted today, not the soup! 15 oz. can is the typical size here.

  • Nancy

Thanks again, looking forward to making tonight. It will be a great lunch to bring to work. Also can’t wait to make the bean burritos, they sound fabulous!

  • Dawn K.

Do you think this would freeze well?

  • Annie

I haven’t tried it so I can’t say. The only way to know is try it and see!

  • Yet another absolutely fantastic recipe from you!! This literally took me 10 minutes and was delicious! Thank you :)

  • Jill (RedKitchensRock)

Absolutely delicious! My hubby and I both LOVED it…he was even satisfied post-hockey (in which he comes home starving for dinner!)
I add a bit of siracha hot sauce and a dash of lime-juice – but it was good without it too.
Thanks Annie, for another go-to recipe!

  • Just made this. It is delicious with yellow spanish rice !!!

  • Whitney

I just re-heated some that I froze a couple months ago. It tastes just as good as it did the first time :)

  • Wendy Campbell

Just made this–very yummy! I used a mix of half red and half green salsa (due to a shortage) and licked it–had a nice kick! Our topping choices were crumbled cornbread, bacon, sour cream, green onion, and cheese.

  • Likeaneagleinflight

So easy, I love it. It is awesome in flavor and healthy. Very cool!!

  • Likeaneagleinflight

I used green enchilada sauce and chicken broth. Still came out awesome!

  • Amber

I love how easy it is to make this soup! It also seems like you can switch it up a bit with different salsa’s/sauce’s and toppings. Thanks for sharing! It was yummy!!! :)

  • Corianne

Oh my gosh this was amazing!!! I actually ran out of cumin and it was still one of the best soups I’ve had in a long time! Love it and will be making it again!!! Thank you for a great recipe!!!

  • Ashton

Another winner from Annie’s Eats! Thanks!

  • Robin

This is one of my favorite quick recipes. So tasty and so simple. Thank you!

  • Cara

    Delicious and easy! Loved this!
