I don’t know about you, but as a child I was fairly indiscriminate when it came to candy.  We didn’t have candy all that often so when holidays came around, I was always very excited about all the candy I collected.  I ate my favorites first (chocolate), then some in between-ers (Nerds, Starburst, etc.) and then I might try some of the candies I already knew I didn’t like – such as the conversation hearts.  And every time, I wondered why I had put that chalky bad-tasting candy in my mouth again.  I think it’s because they are so cute, I just wanted to like them.

Well, these cookies are my solution.  All the cuteness of conversation hearts, but in the form of a delicious fun cookie! I’ve had these cookies in my head pretty much since last Valentine’s Day, and have just been waiting and waiting to make them.  I’m so happy I finally got the chance, because I had a total blast making these.  Now I have to tell you, I started out with a list of some pretty generic phrases to write on my cookies, but as I decorated, I got more and more creative (and Ben started feeding me some more humorous suggestions.)

So, if you’re a fan of The Office, I know you’ll like these.

And then we just got really ridiculous, as seen above.  Inspired by everything from Paris Hilton to Twilight, the ridiculous phrases were more fun to come up with than the traditional ones.  We were literally doubled over with laughter by the time I was finished.  But, I think the silly hearts have their place too.  After all, real conversation come with quite a few odd phrases.  “Don’t tell”, “Email me”, “Goodbye”, “Gotcha” to name a few.  I packaged my cookies up in boxes for friends and they were a huge hit.

    I made a double batch of cookies, and a double batch of royal icing to decorate them. It ended up being the perfect amount. I have found after decorating countless batches of these cookies to err on the side of too much icing. It’s easy to make, but it’s a pain to have to get out the mixer and make more instead of doing it right the first time!

    What sugar cookie recipe are you using? I am guessing that might be the problem. Mine are left out for about 2 days and sometimes 3 in the decorating process, but they are still soft and not at all dry. I actually think the royal icing helps seal in some of the moisture, more than other frostings.

    I’m pretty artsy-craftsy, but I think anyone can be artistic if they want. You don’t have to be artistic to decorate cookies (especially if you use someone else’s design), you just need a steady hand.

    Royal icing doesn’t have much of a taste at all, but I love it for the cuteness factor. If I want frosting, I eat a cupcake. For me, cookies are about the cookie itself. I obviously love it, if you look back through the blog and see just how many cookies I have decorated with it. I never decorate them with anything else.

    I tried your cut out cookie recipe and had a bit of a problem. The dough was quite crumbly and it only gave me 25 cookies. Any ideas?

    If the dough was crumbly, you may have measured the flour a little densely. You could try spooning it into a measuring cup, rather than scooping. As for the yield, that will depend entirely on the size and shape of cookie cutter you use.

    I use imitation almond extract all the time when I make these for people with nut allergies. Or you could increase the vanilla, add some lemon zest, whatever. They’re very adaptable.

    question for ya… i tried to make some red royal icing the other day + added quite few toothpicks full of the gel colouring + could only get pink icing… any tips?

    Hi Arenda,
    Some of the very vivid colors like red and black do require a LOT of the icing gel color. I have noticed with both red and black that the shade will appear a little off while the icing is still wet (pinkish when I want red, grayish when I want black) but once the icing dries, it is the color I was hoping for. So I usually add color until it seems the additions aren’t making a difference, and then just use the icing. It seems the dried color is always what I wanted. Hope that helps!

    Cookies with royal icing take a lot of time overall, but most of it is inactive (simply waiting for the icing to dry). I would say the actual time spent on the cookies (baking, decorating, etc.) is not more than 2-3 hours total. It certainly has gotten quicker with practice.

    I tackled these this weekend and tried to mass produce cookies for three different classroom parties. In the end I tried to rush this entire process and I didn’t end up with wonderful cookies, just OK cookies.

    My advise – Don’t rush it & watch the baking times so the cookies aren’t under cooked!

    I made them!! I LOVE them :) I made smaller ones in order to bring them to school easily. I also used only 4 colors, red, purple, blue and white, in order to cut down on clean up. They don’t look quite as artistic as yours lol but I still enjoy them! Thank you for the recipe!
    For people asking about piping bags… I actually use ziplock baggies and just cut a whole in the corner to w/e size is appropriate!

    Unfortunately I don’t have a list for that. I tend to just try random colors and mix as needed until I get the colors I am going for.
