As much as I love making and eating yeast breads, quick breads are also delicious and are a super quick alternative.  Normally I like to make bread bowls to go with our chili, but I had a busy day at school and a lot to do around the house, so I made this instead.  In about 5 minutes it was prepped and into the oven to bake – it doesn’t get much easier!  This beer flavor really came through in this delicious loaf.  It has a firm crust on the top, and while the inside is nice and soft, it is definitely hearty enough to be a perfect dipping vehicle for chili.  Ben enjoyed it so much that he used it for toast in the morning :-)

Easy Cheesy Beer Bread

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

4 ½ tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar

12 oz. beer

2 tbsp. butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350°.  Lightly grease a 9×5” loaf pan.

In a large bowl, combine flours, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.  Whisk to combine well.  Add cheese and whisk to combine.  Slowly add beer to dry ingredients and stir lightly until just combined, and all ingredients are completely moistened.  Place into a prepared loaf pan and pour melted butter over the top.  Place in the oven and bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • I was thinking of making chili this week, maybe this is what I’ll have with it.

  • Sounds delicious! I’ve never made beer bread so I can’t wait to try this.

  • This looks wonderful! It’s been on my never-ending list of recipes to make! I’m hoping to make chili soon now that it’s getting a bit cooler here- this looks like the perfect side to go with it!

  • My dad always made beer bread when we were younger and I just loved it. I have made it a few times in adulthood but never thought about adding cheese. Going to have to try that!

  • Oh I’ll definitely be trying this bread!

  • Mmmmhhh….Beer! What a great idea!

  • Oh yay! I’m glad you guys liked it. But I mean…really. Cheese + Beer + Bread — who wouldn’t?? LOL! :) The chili looks yummmmmy!

  • What a great bread recipe!

So many people tell me that cheese bread or any bread made with beer can’t be bad. I’ve never tried one – I think I’ll try my hand with this one.

This bread really was great! It was *super* quick and easy and tasted great still over the next two days!! Next time I would add some more cheese so that the flavor comes through a bit more.

  • Thanks, Annie! Happy New Year! Your blog looks great and your family is beautiful! :)

  • Annie, just wanted to let you know that we had a loaf of extra bread from chili the other night and tonight came up with a fantastic way to use the leftovers!!

We made a sandwich out of the bread, ham, sharp cheddar, carmelized onions, and pub style mustard. We served it with a pickle and a veggie. So quick and easy and definitely delish!!

This was my first time making beer bread, and let me tell you – it was amazing! I served it with chilled spinach dip and it was a great combination.

I made this bread this morning and while it came out beautiful and my house smelled great, the taste was quite bitter, and I wonder if 4-1/2 teaspoons of baking powder might be too much?

  • annieseats

Mine has never been bitter and I’ve made it many times. It’s possible it could have been the beer you used.
